Modbus TCP: How to Get Data from Climatic Chambers and Power Amplifiers

Complex environmental tests combining vibration and climatic impact are becoming a trend in the testing industry. RULA Technologies provide a convenient tool for running such tests with RL-C21 and RL-C25-series controllers.

TestUp vibration testing software in RULA-controllers utilizes the Modbus TCP protocol to obtain data from climate chambers and adjust the power amplifier gain.

ModBus protocol is a widely used industrial standard applied to transmit data over RL-232, RS-485, Ethernet and other connections. In TestUp ModBus TCP is based on Ethernet connection and TCP data transmit protocols.

Supported devices

The technology was implemented and tested with Hardy climatic chambers and Xier 43001 power amplifiers. The same general principles can be applied to a wide range of climate chambers and power amplifiers.

Software settings

Climatic chamber

To establish connection with climate chamber, press the Climatic Chamber Control button located on the Main ribbon tab:

Modbus TCP — Climatic chamber control

The button calls the settings window shown in the picture below.

Modbus TCP — Climatic chamber control settings

Enter the IP-address of the chamber and the port in the window. Here you can also specify the data to be received from the chamber (temperature, humidity, or both) and the read-period in milliseconds.

After entering the settings, press the Check Connection button. If the settings are correct, the following message will appear:

Modbus TCP — Climatic chamber control success

While the test is running, the temperature and humidity graphs can be plotted:

Modbus TCP — Temperature vs. Time / Humudity vs. Time

These two plots can be included in the test report:

Power amplifiers

To enable power amplifier control, open the Panels drop-down list and select the Amplifier Control option. The Amplifier Control panel shown in the picture below will appear.

Modbus TCP — Power amplifier integration

If you press the “Settings” button, the “Connection Settings” window is shown:

Modbus TCP — Connection settings

Here specify the amplifier model, IP address, port and data reading period. After entering the settings, press the “Check Connection” button. If all the settings are correct, you will see the message shown below:

Modbus TCP — connection settings tooltip

After establishing the connection you can follow the test data on the Amplifier Control Panel.

Modbus TCP — Amplifier Control Panel

The following data is displayed in read-only mode:

  • Output current;
  • Output voltage;
  • Temperature.

The Gain of the amplifier can be enabled, disabled, or set directly from the tab.
